Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) I had to smile when I read Damon Shulman's autobiographic words "I am from a musical family". What an understatement! His father Phil and his uncles Ray and Derek were no less than co-founders of one of the most influential bands of early art rock: "Gentle Giant". I appreciate how he refuses to use his family ties to fish for popularity. So "Then", based on Phil Shulman's recollections of his childhood, was released silently, without a big sticker "The Next Generation Of Gentle Giant". Chapeau! Favorite track: Jimmy Case.

'Then' is composed by Damon Shulman with prose written and narrated by Philip Shulman. There are 9 ensemble pieces. 6 are narrated with two reflective instrumental intermezzos and one closing instrumental. The narration recounts excerpts from Philip Shulman's reminiscences of his childhood in multi-cultural Glasgow. Philip conveys curiosity, comfort and unease with his surroundings and heritage at this time in conjunction with some scallywag tales from the naughty boys book of adventure.
This is the original demo recording played by Damon on the Roland JV1080 in 1998. However, it was written for an ensemble band and was appropriately arranged and transcribed with specific instrumentation.
